Redrick Sultan (Self Titled Album)

Ok, so jazz isn’t really my thing, and Redrick Sultan is a jazz band. Well, not a jazz band for purists per say. It seems to me that these guys were probably in a high school jazz band, and they had a weird acid head teacher who lent them Zappa and Can albums. Not bad stuff, but again, not my thing. I usually love low-fi recordings, but I also usually listen to scummy rock and roll bands, where the low-fi sound works. The tin can production on many of these tunes just doesn’t fit with the prog/jazz offerings here.
Don’t get me wrong, these guys can play their instruments, and they do so really well over the 12 sprawling-tempo-changing tunes on this self titled CD.
I probably won’t be pulling this CD out for listening kicks much, (unless I score some really good drugs,) but I would go see these guys live ‘cause I like weird, and Redrick Sultan is nothing, if not weird.
