What I got in the mail this week
Hey Darren Ollinger here again for another edition of “What I got in the mail this week”. Come to think of it… I should have really called it “What I got in The Mail this Month” cause you folks have no clue when I actually receive my packages. But since it’s the title, we’ll stick with it. A Brief synopsis of what happens here before we get started. I host Project Punk on X929 every Sunday at 10pm and because of this I always get “serviced” CD’s. Most people wouldn’t mind being “serviced” in a different way, but I’m alright with free music. Now back to the albums, some I receive are really good, some ok and some are fucking awful. So this week I’m going to start with the ok.
The album is from a Band called Parkway Drive titled Deep Blue. It was sent to me from the good folks over at Epitaph so you would understand the surprised look on my face when it put it in and heard a pretty bad ass Metal record. Their sound is pretty A-typical metal stuff, with a healthy batch of power chords and men yelling at me. I’m also guessing this might be a concept record, about drowning or something, but I really didn’t pay that much attention to the story line. The one stand out track is Home is For the Heartless that features Brett Gurewitz giving his best B/R whoa’s to a blistering metal track. All in all… not bad stuff.
Now to something different and kind of awesome; a band called Outernational. This is a 6 song EP called “Eyes On Fire”. These kids are from New York and this album is pretty cool. It’s got a huge Clash feel to it and it’s produced by Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine fame. Track four is called “Fighting Song” featuring Morello, so I thought it would be a huge wank fest, but I quickly found out it featured him on Vocals. Weird? Yes. Does it work? Yes. Get this record if you can find it.
And finally I was given the new Fall City Fall record. Ya sure, I didn’t get it in the mail, but it was delivered to me… so it still counts. The album is called 1629 and holy fuck it’s incredible. It’s another concept record about some crazy old dude living in a house on 14th street and that he… actually I’m probably telling it wrong, so forget I said anything… Ask the band to tell you the tale because it is impressive. The songs are strong, the production is stronger. Buy this record and support this awesome Calgary band!
Well I guess that’s it. I really didn’t have any shitty records to tell you about. Maybe the new Against Me! album, but it isn’t even worth talking about.
Till next time Calgary.
