I'm Darren Ollinger and I host a weekly punk show on X929 called Project Punk (Sundays at 10pm). And since I host one of the only corporate punk rock radio shows I get albums sent to me all the time. Some are awesome, some are ok and some are god awful. This week I have receive a bit of everything . . . so let's start with the awful.
The album is called "What We Left Behind" by a band named Veara. It's on Epitaph and it is fucking garbage. The sticker on the record reads "Pop Mosh is the new Sensation" and that immediately raised some red flags. On first listen . . . and I'm not gonna lie . . . there was only one listen. I thought to myself "holy fuck, do these kids know what decade this is?" This album is a hybrid of everything shitty that has been release since 1995 . . . which might make it the worst thing I've ever. But giving an album this forgettable that prestigious of a title doesn't seem fair. So let's just pretend it was never released and you can thank me for saving your ears.
Now to the good stuff; the kind folks at Metal Blade supplied me with a couple of kick ass new releases "Aeon -- Path of Fire" and "As I Lay Dying -- The Powerless Rise". Now I'm not gonna really break these albums down because I'm not a metal guy and I would feel like a poser. But what I do know is these records are fucking rad and fucking heavy.
And last but not least my buddy Rob sent me a gem from the Blue Uniform Listening Room. It's a Calgary comp that was to be released back in '94 called "Failure of a Brave and Foolish Act", but it never saw the light of day until now. It features such scene staples from that era including All Rights Reserved, Blind Hate, Why?, Dodge and Roadcrew Orange. I could be hard on the production on this one, but why spread any negativity to a bunch of kids that were trying to strengthen the Calgary scene. The stand outs on this one are "Blind" from All Rights Reserved and "All Fall Down" from Roadcrew Orange. Do yourself a favour and the next time you see Rob Dunlop lurking around the town ask him for a copy, you'll be glad you got your hands on a piece of Calgary hardcore history.
